When should you talk to your kids about puberty?
A parent should talk to their child (girl or boy) regularly and gradually over a period of time and discuss the changes that happen in the body and provide information in a manner that they can handle the change.
Ideally, the discussion should happen before the change appears (for example they should know about breast bud development by 8 years and about the first period by 11 years) so that they are psychologically well prepared for the change.

Uterine polyps are growths that occur due to overgrowth of the endometrium which is the inner lining of the uterus. Therefore, they are also called endometrial polyps. They are attached to the endometrium by a thin stalk or a broad base. If an endometrial polyp is attached to the uterine surface by a narrow elongated pedicle, then it is known as pedunculated, if they have a large flat base then they are known as sessile. They grow into the cavity of the uterus and sometimes when large can even protrude through the cervix and rare cases through the vagina. The polyps may be round or oval, and range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters or even larger. There may be one or several polyps present. Causes of Uterine Polyps The polyps are usually benign. They occur after the age of 40 and after menopause but can occur in younger women. They usually cause bleeding problems and occasionally get in the way of getting pregnant. There is no clear reason why the polyps develop. Women who have high estrogen levels tend to make polyps. Obesity, high blood pressure, HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) and tamoxifen tablets can increase […]

The use of tobacco is gradually increasing. Smoking is becoming a major health issue for women. The health effects of tobacco occur from smoking manufactured cigarettes and other forms of tobacco such as smoking traditional hand-rolled flavored cigarettes, bidis, use of water pipes and use of smokeless tobacco, and reverse cigarette smoking. The risk of dying in women who smoke is elevated as compared to the risk of dying in women who do not smoke. Smoking has an impact on the reproductive health of women. Women who smoke are more likely to have difficulty in getting pregnant not only the first time but even after the first pregnancy. Smoking can also cause delays in conceiving. Women who get pregnant and have been smoking. have an increased risk of premature rupture of membranes.increased risk of bleeding between the placenta and the uterine wall which can lead to an emergency.increases the risk of placenta previa which is partial or total obstruction of the opening of the cervix by the Placenta.increases the risk of preterm delivery. Children who are born to women who smoke have a high chance of being smaller than the average birth weight of their peers and they are at […]

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and is a powerful anti-oxidant. It is neither stored in the body nor made in the body. It is excreted in the urine. Therefore one needs to take adequate amounts from the diet. Here are some of the benefits of Vitamin C. Role of Vitamin C in the body It vitalizes the immune system and plays a crucial role in helping us deal with our infections and inflammations. It plays an important role in iron absorption from the gut. There is some evidence that it has a beneficial effect on the blood pressure. It has shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and gout too. Vitamin C Rich Food Vitamin C is easily found in fruits and vegetables. High amounts are present in oranges, grapefruit, lemons, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, tomatoes, and leafy green vegetables. Endometrial hyperplasia thickens the uterus lining that causes heavy or abnormal bleeding. It raises the risk of endometrial cancer and uterine cancer. It is a common side effect of Tamoxifen after Breast Cancer. A Endometrial Hyperplasia Case Report By Dr. Sangeeta Agrawal I will discuss a common side effect of Tamoxifen with the example of a case report.I would like to share this because this could be relevant to many women.Tamoxifen is commonly given to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer.Tamoxifen is the oldest and most-prescribed selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It is used in women and men diagnosed with hormone-receptor-positive, breast cancer to reduce the risk of cancer coming back (recurring). Why is Tamoxifen Given? • It reduces the risk of recurrence of breast cancer by 40% to 50% in postmenopausal women and by 30% to 50% in premenopausal women.• It reduces the risk of new cancer developing in the other breast by about 50%.• Preoperatively to shrink large, hormone-receptor-positive breast cancers before surgery.• Slow or stop the growth or advanced (metastatic) hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. Endometrial Hyperplasia Case Report Our patient was a 58-year-old woman, menopausal for 10 years, mother of one child who is now 30 years of […]

Both isolation and quarantine are methods of preventing the spread of COVID-19. Quarantine Quarantine is used when you come in contact with someone who has aninfection with the coronavirus. Quarantine means that you remain separated from others because you have been exposed to the virus and you may be infected. The quarantine can be done in a designated facility or at home. It is for a period of 14 days. Isolation Isolation is used for people with COVID-19 symptoms or who have tested positive for the virus. The person is separated from other people, ideally in a medical facility where they can receive clinical care. If isolation in a medical facility is not possible and you are not in a high-risk group of developing severe disease, isolation can take place at home. If you have symptoms, you should remain in isolation for at least 10 days plus an additional 3 days without symptoms. If you are infected and do notdevelop symptoms, you should remain in isolation for 10 days from the time you test positive.

Nowadays everyone is talking of the Corona vaccine. Everyone wants that magical vaccine to be available so that we can fight and finish the Corona virus. Several different types of vaccine are being developed. The aim of every vaccine is to generate long lasting antibodies in good amount and as quickly as possible with one dose and zero side effects. It is a tall order. There are several different types of vaccines that are being prepared. Types of Corona Vaccinations Inactivated virus vaccines: this uses a form of the virus that has been inactivated so that it cannot cause disease, but still generates an immune response.Protein-based vaccines: this uses fragments of viral proteins that mimic the COVID-19 virus but do not cause the disease and generate an immune response.Viral vector vaccines: this uses a virus that has been genetically engineered so that it can’t cause disease but can safely generate antibodies to the viral protein.RNA and DNA vaccines: this uses genetically engineered RNA or DNA to generate a protein that is identical to the viral protein and can safely prompt an immune response without causing the disease. The vaccination process has already started as I write this article. We all […]
