Amenorrhea Treatment

Amenorrhea is the absence of period or menstruation. The good news is Amenorrhea Treatment is possible. You may need a check-up, hormonal tests, sonography, and certain special tests depending on the suspected cause of Amenorrhea. Treatment will depend on the cause of the problem.

What are the types of Amenorrhea?

It is classified into two types – primary and secondary.

Primary Amenorrhea

Primary amenorrhea is when a young girl :

  1. Not have menses by age of 14 yrs and also secondary sexual characteristics (I.e.development of breast and pubic hair.) Or
  2. No menses by age of 16 yrs despite having secondary sex characteristics

In either of these cases, she would need further investigation. There can be many causes for primary amenorrhea. One would need investigations and then appropriate treatment.

It is advisable to seek a consultation with Dr. Sangeeta Agrawal if you have not got your periods at all and you are 16 years of age or if you are only 14 but also do not have other pubertal changes.

Secondary Amenorrhea

Secondary amenorrhea occurs when a woman who has been having normal menstrual cycles stops getting her periods for 6 or more months, but excludes women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, menopausal, using Depo-Provera, or having an LNG-IUS in situ.

Secondary amenorrhea may happen in case of:

  • Obesity
  • Loss of weight suddenly – due to diet or obesity surgeries.
  • Too much exercise for long periods.
  • Severe emotional stress
  • Cancer treatment
  • Tumors in the brain
  • Various medication
  • The lining of the uterus is damaged after Dilatation and Curettage. – This happens when it is done repeatedly e.g. multiple terminations of pregnancy.

Patients may have various symptoms besides the lack of periods depending on the cause of amenorrhea.

What is the difference between Quarantine and Isolation?

Both isolation and quarantine are methods of preventing the spread of COVID-19. Quarantine Quarantine is used when you come in contact with someone who has aninfection with the coronavirus. Quarantine means that you remain separated from others because you have been exposed to the virus and you may be infected. The quarantine can be done in a designated facility or at home. It is for a period of 14 days. Isolation Isolation is used for people with COVID-19 symptoms or who have tested positive for the virus. The person is separated from other people, ideally in a medical facility where they can receive clinical care.  If isolation in a medical facility is not possible and you are not in a high-risk group of developing severe disease, isolation can take place at home.
