Occasionally patients may approach us for abortions after 12 weeks.
This situation arises in
- Young unmarried sexually active girls who may not realize that they are pregnant or those who are aware but were too scared to approach the doctor due to the social taboo associated with being pregnant.
- Women who have detected to have an abnormal fetus. Eg. Down syndrome, neural tube defect.
IN INDIA ABORTIONS ARE LEGAL UP TO 20 WEEKS.
If there is an abnormality detected ion the fetus then termination can be done upto 24 weeks after taking the required tests and permissions.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT DO ILLEGAL ABORTIONS, SEX DETERMINATION AND SEX SELECTIVE ABORTION.
There are various methods for termination at this stage of pregnancy and the choice of method depends on the procedure approvals by the regulatory authorities.
We require the consent / signature of 2 registered medical officers to be able to do the termination between 12 to 20 weeks.
The procedure is always done in a hospital or nursing home that is licensed for this purpose.
The Process is as follows
- Gynecological consultation and check up
- Confirm the size of pregnancy
- Confirm the indication for which termination is being done.
- The patient is then admitted to the hospital or nursing home that is chosen by her.
- The patient will usually require 2 to 3 days in the hospital

- The necessary informed written consent is taken
- The necessary signatures, of registered medical practitioners are taken.
- Pre procedure blood tests are done.
- The procedure is then initiated with medicines. The medicines will stimulate contractions and lead to the expulsion of the fetus in most cases. The placenta then follows. Once the placenta and the fetus are completely expelled then the procedure is complete.
- Occasionally the placenta and fetus may remain behind and may require surgical removal. In that case the patient is taken to the operation theater and the fetus and/or placenta are removed under anesthesia.
- Once the procedure is complete the patient will need rest in the hospital for a few hours, sometimes for a day.
- She is usually given analgesics and antibiotics after the procedure.
- She is also given medication to suppress the lactation as it may start in some patients.
- Contraception can also be discussed if required and we can help you choose a method that best suits your needs.
- The patient is discharged usually within 12 to 24 hours.
