Skin Changes in Pregnancy

It is quite commonly said that skin changes in pregnancy. One has a glow on the face. Well yes, this is true, and one is truly glowing during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, there is an increase in the volume of blood in the body, and the blood vessels also dilate. Therefore, there is an increase in the flow of blood to the skin.

Further, the hormones also play an important role. These physiological changes result in the glow.

There are a few more skin changes in pregnancy which are as follows:

Some women have a darkening of their skin color possibly due to an increase in estrogen and melanocyte-stimulating hormone levels. The areola and the central line on the chest and abdomen particularly become prominent.
Some women experience increased pigmentation on the cheeks, nose, and chin in the form of dark patches which is called chloasma.
Stretch Marks are pink or purple lines that develop on the belly, breasts, hips, and legs mainly the thighs. They are due to increased stretching of the skin due to the rapid growth of the belly
Some women tend to get acne (pimples). During pregnancy, the sebaceous glands of the skin produce more oil and therefore some women tend to get pimples.

Skincare In Pregnancy

Healthy nutrition and good hydration are especially important
Use a gentle cleanser to clean the face.
Moisturize the skin daily.
Being active in pregnancy can go a long way in keeping your body fit and toned up.
Yoga and meditation can help in changing the outlook from negative to positive.
Use sunscreen where required.
Avoid products that you have not used before.
Avoid acne treatment products that contain retinoids as they can harm the fetus.
