This is my best attempt to put forth some information on this subject. The information may not be entirely correct and even if it is correct today things may change soon and the contrary may be true. However, it contains coronavirus safety tips for pregnant women. Stay at home, stay safe.

COVID-19 is a viral infection caused by the corona virus. It affects the lungs.

Symptoms of Coronavirus:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Breathlessness
  • It also may cause nausea and diarrhea
  • Loss of your sense of smell or taste.
  • Symptoms can appear usually 2 to 14 days (sometimes longer) after contact with the virus.
  • It spreads from one person to another mainly through droplets from talking coughing and sneezing.

The infection is not any different in the pregnant woman. It is also not clear whether it can pass from the mother to the fetus through the placenta or during delivery and breastfeeding. Therefore it is very important to follow coronavirus safety tips for pregnant women.

Pregnant women need to take the same precautions as the general public,

  • First and foremost is to stay at home
  • Follow rules for social distancing i.e. staying at least 6 feet away from other people if you need to go out
  • Wear face masks. A simple homemade cloth face mask may be ok. You do not need to wear a surgical mask or medical-grade mask (N95 mask).
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Clean hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol
  • Avoid touching your own eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Avoiding people who are sick and have fever cough and those who history of coming in contact with a patient.
  • In case you think you have been exposed to the virus or if you have symptoms then it is important to report to the hospital and get yourself tested.
  • For routine antenatal care, it is important to be in communication with your doctor. Try resolving minor issues on the phone. A visit is required in case there is anything urgent.
  • The labor and delivery process is not altered for the patient unless she is unwell and is suspected of having COVID 19 infection.
  • The mother can breast-feed unless she is already infected or is unwell and suspected to have the infection. It is prudent to still take all necessary precautions like washing hands before handling the baby and the breast.
