Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a procedure used to look inside the uterus with a thin long instrument that has a camera at one end. It is done either to diagnose a problem inside the uterus or to treat a problem.

The common situations when one would need a hysteroscopy are :

  • Heavy and/or prolonged menstrual periods
  • Very painful periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Frequent miscarriages
  • Difficulty in getting pregnant (infertility)

Hysteroscopy: What to expect?

Hysteroscopy may be done in the outpatient but that needs a very special instrument. By and large, it is done in the hospital as a daycare procedure under an anesthetic. Some basic blood tests may be required for this purpose. You need to come fasting on the day of the procedure. Once under the anesthetic, the neck of the uterus is gently dilated so that the hysteroscope can be inserted inside. Then a fluid (usually saline for diagnostic procedures and glycine for operative procedures) is used to distend the cavity so that we can see inside.

A good look inside allows us to see :

  • The shape of the cavity,
  • Presence of a septum that divides the cavity.
  • Presence of fibroid or polyp,
  • Presence of adhesions,
  • Thickened abnormal lining
  • The lost intrauterine device can be located

In case the procedure is done for treatment, then the following procedures are conducted :

  • Removal of fibroid/polyp
  • Removal of a lost intrauterine device
  • Cutting of adhesions
  • Cutting of septum
  • In cases of heavy prolonged periods to destroy the lining using an electric current

After the procedure, the recovery is usually quick, and one can leave the hospital on the same day. One can return to work the next day. Only in certain situations, would need rest for a few days. The follow up would depend on the situation. The procedure is very safe but there are risks as with all surgical procedures. It may be related to the anesthesia or to the procedure itself.

What is the difference between Quarantine and Isolation?

Both isolation and quarantine are methods of preventing the spread of COVID-19. Quarantine Quarantine is used when you come in contact with someone who has aninfection with the coronavirus. Quarantine means that you remain separated from others because you have been exposed to the virus and you may be infected. The quarantine can be done in a designated facility or at home. It is for a period of 14 days. Isolation Isolation is used for people with COVID-19 symptoms or who have tested positive for the virus. The person is separated from other people, ideally in a medical facility where they can receive clinical care.  If isolation in a medical facility is not possible and you are not in a high-risk group of developing severe disease, isolation can take place at home.
