Pregnant women are advised some important tips while framing a healthy pregnancy diet. These are:
- Meals should have carbohydrates in the form of starch such as potatoes, bread, rice and pasta, and wholegrain.
- Try to consume at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day
- Avoid foods that are high in calories and fat.
- Eat a low-fat diet
- Do not need to increase their calorie intake just because you are pregnant.
- You do not need to eat for two.
- Increase the intake of fiber-rich foods.
- Consume an adequate amount of protein every day.
- Eat dairy foods to meet their calcium requirements.
- Try to eat small frequent meals rather than just three or four big meals.
- Never skip breakfast as it is the most important meal of the day.
- Avoid caffeine in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and in the rest of the pregnancy, caffeine intake should be limited to 200 milligrams (mg) per day.
- Adequate hydration is very important.
